A big hit: New tee-ball league revitalizes Rupert Bell Park
This could've been a boring, four-paragraph story, but instead was an amazing look at how a new tee-ball league started and why it is so important. A fun, light tone made this story an enjoyable read while still including all the facts and information. And the pictures were phenomenal.

From the ashes -- Growth sprouting up from charred ground following fire at Pilot Mountain
This was another example of a story you don't see every day. Scott Sexton took an original approach, examining how beauty and hope can come from the ugly scene of a forest fire. We need more stories of hope in today's world.

Personal stories and the revelations that come with them play an important role in ending the opinion page to readers and humanizing the newspaper as a whole. Scott does a great job taking slices of his life and sharing those with readers.

Winston Weaver Fire: Then and Now
Comprehensive reporting on a serious issue facing many of your readers. Maps and photos add greatly to the report. The Journal certainly provided the necessary resources to tell this story correctly, including providing plenty of news space and reporters. Outstanding!

Scott Sexton beautifully peels back the layers of a frustrating legal concept -- sovereign immunity -- and its effect on victims of an accident that's a city's responsibility.
