Police payouts
This is a very detailed series on police payouts. The examples used are very powerful. The interviews and story organization are nicely done. One thing i'd like to see in this type of story is, what do crime victims think of these payouts? I've been a crime victim and frankly, i don't know how I'd react if someone who committed a crime against me had this kind of police experience and then got a large payout.

Is NC the epicenter of competitive gingerbread? Local ‘gingerfriends’ make the case
Incredibly interesting story on something I've never read about nor seen reported on: competitive gingerbread bakers/food artists. I really thought this was perfectly covered by the reporter, with good writing, lots of information and depth of sourcing and nice use of photographs. Two stories helped, too. Thank you!

She admired NCDOT memorial to workers killed on the job, then noticed something missing
I'm not sure many people think about honoring workers killed on the job. I certainly didn't before reading this. Not only does this story successfully educate people that such a thing exists, but it also serves as a reminder that sometimes a simple phone call can make a difference.

Ledes by Josh Shaffer
Well done! All are strong ledes. The vaping lede really clinched it for me. So descriptive - can see students actually vaping in class while the teacher tries to catch them. Strong, strong writing.

Decision Day Looms for Jarin Stephenson
Very nice images, clearly a good deal of time spent with Jaren. As a standalone photoessay, it suffers a bit from lack of cohesiveness and some visual/informational redundancy, probably unavoidable because it was a longish-term project and images were used to accompany multiple stories. Bu all in all, great job!

The photographer managed to imply water here without showing it. There is su much expression in the photo, and the cloud / jumper juxtaposition just makes the shot. Nice work!

North Carolina Barbecue series of stories
Immaculate reporting in a big issue for people, culture and the state's history - barbecue. The reporter hit all the bases in this trilogy of 'cue goodness. Loved the snappy writing, good word use and structure and clearly expert insight into 'cue. Videos and photographs added peppery spice to this series. Great job!!!
