Sports coverage from our corner of Appalachia
I found a real gem here when I was judging the many fine entries. What is evident here is the passion and the love for writing and covering sports. I really enjoyed the read, the presentation and appreciate the effort it took to do it all so well.

Emerging into the aftermath of Helene
A series of five photos of town residents taking in the damage caused by a hurricane. Some more interesting than others, but not a bad collection.

Andrew Marshall's "The Mountaineer" Ledes
Outstanding work. Writer knows the region well and does a masterful job trying to answer a question on unique highway signage.

Grieving and loving through the storm with God's grace
I really enjoyed the vignette on Grey Wolf and the feature on farmers after the hurricane. Both were character focused and well told, though the Grey Wolf story could've benefitted from a second source (his pastor or the campground owner). The other stories had an over-reliance on long quotes, but they told interesting stories.

Levi Early goes to the mat
The lighting, the spotlight appearing to be on just the wrestlers, makes this an awesome photo.

Ledes by Becky Johnson at the Mountaineer
Gripping lede. Reader can't help but continue on to see what happened on that dreadful day. Terrific use of detail to put reader in subject's shoes.

Resilience in the face of devastation: Stories from Hurricane Helene in Haywood
Wow. This comprehensive look at one community affected by Helene really captured my attention and emotions. The section about the woman who died and the quilt they covered her with was really compelling.

Farewell to hometown pharmacy marks the end of an era
This story illustrates the relationship that small family businesses can form with their communities, and the sadness when one of those businesses closes. A tragic yet heart-warming story in many ways.

Mountaineer breaking news coverage of devastating Helene flooding
Between the cover letter and website updates this package could be used as curriculum in a journalism course. Inspiring.

Sewer Rat Online ad
This one made me laugh because the business name is "Sewer Rat." What a great name for a septic company. Nice use of a picture.

Shop Downtown Waynesville
The look of it screams holiday. It is very cohesive and highlights the local shops very well in one of their busiest times of the year.
