Duke softball coach leads program to best season one year after husband's heart attack
What a great story showcasing the situation facing a coach. It makes you wonder how she had the mind set to wage such an impressive season after dealing with so much personal trauma. I love how the writer sets us up with the perspective her husband shared many years prior about "whatever we do in life, you cannot stop coaching softball." I guess that means personal setbacks as well. Great work!

A $500,000 frat party?
In a world that seems to lack unique experiences, this story seems to defy that expectation. The reporter has done a good job of digging into multiple angles of the fundraiser, though it seems like this is just scratching the surface. I would be curious to know any follow up on what happened to the funds.

1) NC church was once a courthouse. Plus 2 more stories
A trio of essays exploring the historical preservation of a community's people, resources and structures-these focusing on the Black community and its contribution to historic aspects of community evolution. Good writing, reporting/sourcing. Needed closer copy editing and attribution style. Good example of story attracting reader engagement!

A legendary Durham bridge still mauls trucks, though not as often as it used to
This is a standout piece of local journalism. It's engaging, well-researched, and built around a unique, long-running civic curiosity. The story is historical while being fresh including public safety updates and quotes. It's highly readable, deeply informative and written with clarity and subtle humor that doesn't drift into opinion. The use of traffic data and DOT interviews adds depth.

Police chases
Excellent writing, reporting/sourcing! Readers for the full story here, not just the traffic fatality alone, but the depth of detail related to police pursuit tactics and limits, the suspect driver's background, the court's rationale and justification for its decisions and the city's justification for settlement. All precedent and accounted!

NC farmers look for solutions as corn crop withers
Corn crops for the win. It's obvious that Tammy Grubb put the work in, with multiple sources cited, historic agriculture stats, and from actual farmers dealing with their crops. Nice work, well written. Photojournalist Robert Willett also should be recognized for his images to support Tammy's work. Great team! Congratulations on your 1st place. It was nice to see this in the business entries.
