Asheville inundated
What an incredible group of photos! The framing and showcasing of devastation, both as it's happening and after, are all perfectly captured here. The only photo I would have liked to see a different angle of is the trio carrying the motor, but I understand you take what you can get sometimes. Fantastic job!

Deserting Women special report webpage
I'm not crazy about the illustration or photos, but it's a hard story for visuals. Maybe if there was a baby? The writing and analysis were really well done, and the graphics were helpful.

Bunch of bull
Lots of personal accounts add to the gravity the story. Witness testimony is provocative. Really makes the reader think about what was experienced and read.

Coastal Kindling special report webpage
I wasn't a huge fan of using an illustration as the big image for the project homepage when there was great photography, but overall the maps and story analysis were top-notch. The map showing the Great Lake fire perhaps should have had a more prominent red line around the area impacted.

Surviving Helene in Yancey and Mitchell counties
I love that the photographer has people in a majority of their photos. The framing of the gentleman with the shovel is amazing, and the variations of up close and wide showing of the devastation is great. Well done!

Coastal Kindling illustration
This is a strikingly layered piece. The use of bright, chaotic color highlights the volatility of wildfire while still grounding the reader in reality. The illustration demands a second look which is necessary, considering the very real threat. A bold and well-balanced editorial companion.

Kudos to this judge! What a great story - literally made me cry! I would love to see this become a nationwide program. Well-written, with the facts and details interwoven with emotion and rawness. Thank you!

Stunning imagery, especially the main photo on the page. I really thought the headlines were compelling with parallel construction, and the narratives were impressive.

Images of Yancey and Mitchell counties
Collection shows the human toll from the storm. Really like that you presented that factor along with the property damage -- and damage done to nature. It serves the readers to show the emotions, hardship and resilience of the people.

Deserting Women illustration
This illustration does exactly what great editorial art should do: it sets the emotional tone before the reader gets to the story. The image of women facing away captures the growing isolation experienced in many healthcare deserts. It's dignified, restrained and urgent, which mirrors the reporting. A flawless blend of message and tone.

Out of the mud
Love the pictures which add to the written work. The flow of news unbroken by ads makes the article a joy to read. Cutlines are descriptive and add to what the pictures cannot. Excellent work.
